Frequently Asked Questions About CEREC Crowns

At Cakmes Dental Studio, we work with patients looking to achieve their ideal smile through dental restorative services. Living with teeth damaged from decay, injuries, and poor structural integrity can not only cause a loss of confidence but can also be a detriment to oral health. This is where crowns come in. Crowns are custom caps cemented to a patient’s tooth to increase functionality and appearance. One type of crown is made using a CEREC system. When considering which crown is right for you, many questions are involved. We’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions regarding CEREC crowns. Use this information to see if CEREC crowns are right for you!

What is a CEREC crown?

The ceramic restoration technique can be used to create full crowns in just one visit without temporary crowns or impressions. All information needed to create custom crowns comes from a tiny, accurate camera that scans the patient’s mouth and relays the dimensions of each tooth. From there, a specialized machine carves those dimensions out of porcelain-colored to natural-colored tooth shades. Your dentist will then apply these to your teeth and send you on your way! This type of crown differs from traditional types in the time it takes to make the crown, color, and material, but is still long-lasting and durable.

How long do CEREC crowns last?

CEREC crowns typically last up to 15 years. Overall this is very dependent on the patient’s oral hygiene. Habitual brushing, flossing, and mouthwash can maintain the quality of the crown as well as prevent harmful medical side effects such as bacteria growth and periodontal disease.

Are CEREC crowns better than traditional crowns?

There are many factors to this question, which leaves us with more than a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. Both CEREC and traditional crowns have pros and cons, however, CEREC crowns offer a few key features that appeal to many of our patients. If you are looking for a faster, same-day procedure with esthetic results, ceramic restoration crowns would be your best option. One-time office visits ultimately save time off from work. Other factors such as tooth shape, bite structure, and more can also be factored in in determining which crown type is best for you.
