The Importance of Preventative Dental Care

Blog Single

Just like going to the doctor for a yearly checkup is important for your overall health, paying a visit to your dentist each year, preferably twice, is critical to ensuring proper dental health. We all know how easy it can be to put off dental appointments until we notice an issue or have some sort of tooth or gum pain. However, routine preventative care is the best way to prevent future dental issues down the road – and this type of care will save you a lot of time and money. At Cakmes Dental Studio, we offer effective preventative care to make sure that your dental and oral health stays in perfect shape.

There are many reasons why preventative dental care is so important to your routine health. First, it helps reduce the chance of any cavities or gum disease. It can also minimize the occurrence of periodontitis, gingivitis, and enamel wear. Routine dental exams also help to prevent any bacteria growth or decay, which keeps your mouth clean and healthy. Without any sort of preventative care, these dental problems can become worse, much more painful, and end up costing you quite a bit of money for the proper dental treatment.

Cakmes Dental Studio is proud to offer many services related to preventative dental care. In addition to routine cleanings and examinations, we also offer sealants, fluoride treatments, periodontal care, and X-rays. National Dentist’s Day

Blog Single

Every year we take time to celebrate the many dentists who help to keep our teeth clean and healthy as part of National Dentist’s Day. This day takes place annually on March 6th and allows us to show appreciation to dental staff as well as pay attention to our own dental care. There are many ways you can observe this day as an appreciative patient!

Thank Your Dentist and Dental Staff

Letting your dentist know that you’re thankful for their help in maintaining your overall dental care goes a long way. This could be as simple as a quick “thank you” next time you’re in the office for an appointment. A nice thank you card or post on social media is also a great way to show your appreciation. If posting on social media, be sure to include the #NationalDentistsDay hashtag.

Schedule A Dentist Appointment

It’s recommended that all adults and children have a routine dental health checkup twice each year. If you’re due for a checkup, give your dentist a call and schedule an appointment. Regular cleanings are important in keeping your teeth, mouth, and gums all healthy. Your dentist will also be able to identify any early warning signs so that you can get the best care right away. Best of all, routine checkups leave your teeth feeling clean so that you can have confidence in your smile.

Monitor Your Dental Health

Take extra time on National Dentist’s Day to make it a goal to improve your dental health. For example, if you only find yourself flossing occasionally rather than every day, commit to a regular flossing routine. Also pay attention to your brushing behaviors, ensuring that you brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each time.

What better way to celebrate National Dentist’s Day than by taking care of your teeth and scheduling a dentist appointment? At Cakmes Dental Studio, we’re thankful for our wonderful dentists, Dr. Nick and Steven Cakmes, and our entire dental staff, as they allow us to provide our patients with the highest quality of care, day in and day out. If you’re due for a dental cleaning or checkup, give us a call at (865) 584-6163 or contact us; we’d love to hear from you for any of your dental needs!

Periodontal Disease and Effects of Overall Health

Blog Single

Everything in the human body is connected in one way or another. The oral cavity is the intersection of medicine and dentistry and the window into a patient’s general health. Hundreds of diseases and medications impact the oral cavity, and pathologic conditions in the mouth have a more significant systemic impact than you might think. Periodontal disease is a prime example of systemic infection and is a topic not to take lightly since it can affect your overall health.

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It’s typically caused by inadequate brushing and flossing habits that allow plaque – a sticky film of bacteria – to build on the teeth and harden. Research has shown that periodontal disease can lead to heart disease, potential strokes, diabetes, respiratory diseases, etc.

Research struggles to determine precisely how issues with gum diseases cause heart disease, but the association is strong. Over time it has been suggested that periodontal disease can increase the risk for heart disease in an otherwise healthy individual. Further research by scientists in the field has found an association between periodontal disease and suffering a stroke. The relationship, similar to heart disease, is currently unclear; research has found that those who suffer a stroke were more likely to have an oral infection than those who are not victims of a stroke.

Research also suggests that those with diabetes are more likely to have gum disease than those without diabetes. Diabetes makes it easier for people to succumb to infection, and the more out of control their diabetes is, the more likely they are to contract gum disease. When you have gum disease, you have a dangerous bacteria in your mouth. This bacteria can be sucked down to the lungs and cause hazardous respiratory disorders, which is extremely dangerous, especially during this coronavirus pandemic.

Taking care of your mouth, teeth, and gums is crucial to having good health. Taking care of your oral health will decrease your risk of other health issues. You can easily prevent periodontal disease by brushing your teeth, flossing, using mouthwash, and getting a dentist’s routine dental cleaning. The team at Cakmes Dental Studio would love to help you keep your oral health in tip-top shape. Contact us today for a cleaning and check-in with our excellent dentists!

Teledentistry – The New Normal

Blog Single

We are in the age of technology, but visiting your dentist virtually? It sounds unrealistic and a little ridiculous, but the fact of the matter is that it is authentic and legitimate. Teledentistry is the use of electronic information, imaging and communication technologies, including interactive audio, video, data communications, and store and forward technologies, to provide and support dental care delivery, diagnosis, consultation, treatment, and transfer of dental information and education. What a mouth full. Simply put, teledentistry is the new normal in this pandemic age of America.

Teledentistry is proven to improve the dental hygiene of patients. Since the use of telehealth systems to connect providers with patients, it has become more convenient for patients to communicate to improve oral health. Since 2003, visits to dental offices have seen a steady decline. Teledentistry is also more affordable than in-office dentistry, which makes it more accessible. Research indicates that patients’ quality of care and success rates were the same whether patients used telemedicine or actually went into a dentist’s office.

Teledentistry itself can include virtual consultations and high-tech monitoring of patients. For example, it could be in the form of a video conference between a dentist and a patient to discuss an urgent matter. This helps people avoid unnecessary hospital visits and can save seats at dental practices. This is an excellent alternative to visiting the dentist with coronavirus because it also keeps the dentist and the patient safe from possibly contracting the virus and making the pandemic worse.

Teledentistry can be a complete game-changer for dentists during the pandemic, and even after coronavirus. This concept can open up availability in dental offices for essential visits. This can help the staff be less overwhelmed and it is convenient for patients; they don’t have to take time off work to go to the dentist.

It is important to remember that if there is an emergency, you should call your dental office immediately, just in case. Teledentistry is excellent for routine check-ups and to ask questions before going to your dental office, but it is still essential to visit for cleanings and any necessary procedures. Contact us today to schedule a consultation or appointment and visit our website to explore all of the dental services we offer. We look forward to hearing from you and giving you the smile you’ve always dreamed of!

Why Dental Implants Might Be the Solution You Need

Blog Single

Accidents happen, and sometimes those accents can damage our beautiful teeth. Losing an adult tooth can feel like the end of the world, we know that at Cakmes Dental Studio. If you have lost teeth, dental implants may be an excellent solution to restore your smile, bring back your confidence, and get your life back to the way it was before.

Dental implants can sound very scary, but they aren’t at all. A dental implant is a replacement for the root or roots of a tooth. Like your tooth roots, dental implants are secured in your jawbone. They are not visible after they have been placed. The implants are then used to secure your tooth’s visible aspects with crowns, bridgework, or dentures. At Cakmes Dental Studio, we provide both implant crowns and implant-supported dentures. Don’t worry, our dentures will give you beautiful shiny white teeth, not the wood ones you may have heard that George Washington had!

Ancient dental implants have been traced back to around 600 AD when tooth-like pieces of shell were hammered into the jaw of a Mayan woman. Luckily, modern medicine has come a long way, and the procedure is a lot safer and smoother. The procedure itself only takes 1 to 2 hours with trained and experienced dentists.

If you have lost teeth, you might be a fantastic candidate for dental implants. Some conditions and diseases may affect whether dental implants are the option for you, but we will find a solution if you schedule a consultation with our team. Three million people in the United States have implants, a number that is growing by 500,000 annually. This option to restore smiles has become a very successful operation.

Our team at Cakmes Dental Studio is very experienced and has had the best training. Dental implant surgery is one of the safest and most predictable procedures in dentistry. If you are considering a dental implant procedure, Cakmes Dental Studio is the place to get it done. Contact us today by requesting an appointment on our website or calling us at 865-584-6163.

National Ice Cream Day Means It’s Time for a Cleaning

Blog Single

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan decreed a day for ice cream and his proclamation for the dairy industry in America. Every third Sunday in July is when all Americans celebrate their love for ice cream on National Ice Cream Day. At Cakmes Dental, we love our ice cream, don’t get us wrong, although we must warn you what happens if you don’t keep your teeth clean when you indulge in the frosty treat. Cavities are the number one disease in your teeth that comes from sugar. Cavities are preventable, so here are a few ways to keep your teeth clean and healthy from the sugars in your favorite dessert.

Space out the Sweets

When you eat sweets, such as ice cream, the pH level in your mouth drops, making it more acidic. Acid is not suitable for your tooth enamel, and the bacteria associated with cavity formation thrive in acidic conditions. A healthy mouth is overwhelmed if it has to defend against acid attack multiple times a day, which is why you should limit the number of times you eat sweets throughout the day. At Cakmes Dental, we fully support eating ice cream during a designated time of the day: Dessert Time!

Swish Your Teeth With Water

Establishing healthy habits after consuming lots of sugar will help your teeth significantly. If you swish water in your mouth after eating sugar, it will help clean your teeth, but do not scrub your tooth enamel. Brushing your teeth immediately after eating sugar can weaken your enamel from the acid attacks.

Don’t Eat Your Ice Cream in Bed

Nights of sleep and sweets do not mix. Late-night eating before bed poses its threat to tooth enamel. If you eat sweets right before bed, you increase a risk that your saliva won’t adequately rebalance your mouth, and cavities can be created from bacteria. Make sure you eat your ice cream before falling asleep and do not brush your teeth too soon after eating your ice cream! Timing is everything.

For National Ice Cream Day, check out if there are any specials at your local ice cream parlor, or try to make your own ice cream. Make sure to schedule teeth cleaning with us at Cakmes Dental to ensure you don’t have any cavities. Head to our website for more information.

Breaking Down a Root Canal – Not as Scary as it Sounds

Blog Single

Root Canals have a horrible reputation: the terrifying name, the horror stories from the dental chair, and everything else surrounding the title. In reality, root canals are not that bad. Millions of teeth are treated and saved by root canals each year, relieving pain and making teeth healthy again. Root canals are something many adults have to deal with, so we are here to break down the procedure to make those nerves go away when you hear from your dentist that you need a root canal.

A root canal treatment is nothing like the scary stories you hear about, with the help of modern-day dentistry. Root canals are very similar to a routine filling and can usually be completed in just one trip to your dentist. A root canal is relatively painless and extremely effective. When you undergo a root canal, the inflamed pulp is removed, and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed.

A root canal’s advantages are efficient chewing, regular biting force, natural appearance, and protection for other teeth from excessive wear or strain. How do you know if you need a root canal? There are a few symptoms people experience, which means that a root canal is necessary. Symptoms may include severe pain while chewing, pimples on the gums, a chipped tooth, sensitivity to hot or cold, swollen gums, and darkening gums.

After a root canal procedure, most patients can return to school or work. Your mouth is numb for around 2-4 hours following the procedure, so the only advisory given is not to eat until the numbness is gone. Root canals are an easy procedure. You can eat up to 1 hour before a procedure, and you can receive local anesthesia not to feel any pain.

At Cakmes Dental, we promise to give efficient and pain-free treatments. Our doctors and dental team make the experience as easy as possible for our patients, breaking the stigma of root canals being painful and scary. If you are experiencing any tooth sensitivity or pain, please give us a call or head to our website. We’ll let you know if a root canal can help stop your pain.

The Difference Between Clear Aligners and Braces

Blog Single

Both braces and clear aligners are meant to straighten your teeth for the purpose of making them more visually appealing and improving your oral health. They both have the same purpose and outcome, so what are the major differences? How do you know which one suits you better?

Traditional braces are consistently evolving and changing to enhance the visual outcome and the patients’ experience. Braces are used by orthodontists to straighten the teeth using brackets on each tooth and a wire that connects them all. The movement of the teeth occurs based on the tightening and adjustment of the interconnecting wire. The orthodontist will “adjust” your braces, typically every six to eight weeks, to ensure the braces are moving the teeth in the optimal time frame, but without causing severe discomfort. Essentially, the wire is tightened to give way for the teeth to move to a certain “checkpoint” on the way to the final goal. If the wire was never tightened, the teeth would remain at that stage or checkpoint for good.

With braces, many patients neglect to take good care of their teeth simply due to how difficult and time consuming it can be to clean around the braces. Each tooth has an individual bracket, and there is a wire connecting them all, so flossing can be complex. It is recommended that patients with traditional braces either use braces-specific floss or a water flosser. Brushing is also more difficult because cleaning around each individual bracket can be tedious. Not taking great care of your teeth with braces can cause cavities, stains, and other dental issues.

Clear aligners work in a very similar way to braces, just minus the metal. Experts create aligners specific to your teeth that are nearly invisible when worn. The aligners are manipulated just enough from your current teeth alignment to gradually straighten your teeth. However, since the aligners still have to fit and appear “invisible,” aligners are usually changed as often as every two weeks. If you wear your clear aligners faithfully, this method can give you a perfect smile very quickly. Also, taking care of your teeth is much easier with clear aligners because you can simply take the aligners off to floss and brush thoroughly.

At Cakmes Dental Studio, we offer clear aligners called ClearCorrect. We are firm believers that everyone deserves a smile they feel confident showing off, so we do our best to help you gain that confidence. Contact us to learn more about our ClearCorrect aligners and schedule a consultation today!

What is Cerec restoration?

Blog Single

At Cakmes Dental Studio, we use the latest dental technology to help you achieve your most beautiful and natural smile. One of the advanced  technologies that we have adopted is CEREC.

What is CEREC?

CEREC or Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics is a computer-aided restoration technique. It uses a machine that combines a camera, computer, and milling instrument to create tooth restorations in the dental office, in just a single visit.

Traditionally, tooth restoration takes several visits to the dentist as the process involves sending your tooth mold to an outside lab and creating a temporary crown for you. This part of the process is eliminated in CEREC.

This system isn’t just more efficient than the traditional restoration process, but it’s also shown to be safer and more effective.

How does it work?

The process begins with your dentist preparing your tooth for restoration. Using advanced software and technology, CEREC takes a photo of the treatment area and converts that into a 3D virtual model.

With feedback from your dentist, the machine creates the final tooth restoration. The milling instrument that it comes with precisely carves a ceramic block based on the exact specifications of your restoration. Your dentist will ensure that the restoration fits well in your mouth before polishing and bonding it to your tooth.

The whole process usually doesn’t take longer than 2 hours.

What are the benefits of CEREC restoration?

Since CEREC uses advanced digital technology, the tooth restoration has a much better fit. This significantly decreases your chance of getting tooth and gum infections as gaps in the teeth and gums can be breeding grounds for bacteria.

Metal restorations may contain some toxic chemicals that may be hazardous to your health. This won’t happen in CEREC as all of its restorations are metal-free.

Lastly, tooth restorations done through CEREC last long and feel more natural than restorations done traditionally.

Want to find out if CEREC would work well for you? Call us 865-584-6163 for more info.
